At the moment we're building a website. Which CMS fits our needs? Learning by doing or outsourcing?
How to get a website? Learning by doing or outsourcing?
We thought briefly about that because we knew right away that we need at least someone advising us. I have some friends working in IT. So at least we had a network to ask around..
Our needs were:
Data base with several tables and parameters
Attaching many PDFs
Data input interface
Login for doctors
Drug page, active substance page, et cetera
The work load to build a website depends a lot on what you need. We need a data base with some connected big tables and heavy parameters like PDFs. So that's already a lot of work - so a little difficult and therefore expensive. Search engines are a lot of work. Log in function and different pages that access the data base are also not that quickly to realize.
CMS or programming from the scratch:
The guy who is programming our website now for 8k€, which was the best offer we got, uses a CMS called MODX.
Apparently, programming from the scratch would have cost over 100k€ and since people already programmed the single components many times before and the code is accessible online.. Why programming everything again?
The problem with CMSs ist that they are limited in functions and if you don't know them well, it's not always possible to know right away if your special needs will be fulfilled.. So this programmer knows MODX very well and is sure that it can do everything we need, so we go with it.
Advantages: Programming advances fast. Every feature seems to be possible. Script can be included everywhere.
Disadvantages: I noticed that not many people know how to use MODX and it seems quite complicated to get into it. That means, if the programmer turns out to be bad, it might be difficult to find someone to take over the project...
